Why? Attention. Push interest in cryptozoology. Just to prove they could. Bring cryptozoologists into the area. Any or all of those.

How? A good taxidermist could make (and have made) creatures that looks like mythical creatures. Freak shows used to do it all the time. A good fake could fool people, which would bring more people into the area. Loch Ness is a prime example of what a 'mythical creature' can do for tourism in an area.

why wouldn't they just come out and say that they had done it? they would get a lot more publicity that way and stuff.
And also not to sound rude or anything, but are you saying that loch ness is a result of taxidermy or something?

They would gain short-term publicity, but the long-term would be much worse for them. Only by keeping it a 'mystery' will they see any gain from it. There is far more potential for profit if they do not announce how they did it.

And, no my comment about Nessie was not in regards to taxidermy. It was about how long an area can milk a legend that has no evidence as long as it is kept 'a mystery'. Hence the comment about how a 'mythical creature' legend can boost the local tourism (and thus, the local economy).
In the beginning, God said "The four-dimensional divergence antisymmetric, second rank tensor equals zero." And there was light, and it was good. And on the seventh day, he rested.

ya i see. but there is the ocasional picture and sutff. i personally don't think i believe in loch ness but i think the pictures and stuff arr kinda cool. i think they could really easily figure out if she was there or not using like thermal sensing or whatever it is in the lake or something.

Check out other crypto websites for the full story on this. Basically it is the body of a racoon which has been exposed to water for some time, so causing loss of flesh from the nose (hence the apparent 'beak'), loss of hair and swelling - a body in water for any period sure does get messed up; ask anyone who's done an autopsy. The teeth argue strongly against a turtle, plus the fact that a turtle is embedded in its shell (the shell is its ribcage), so you can't just pop it out like in cartoons, however appealing the notion.
